The Great Australian Dream of home ownership goes back to Sir Robert Menzies’ famous “forgotten people” speech of 1942. Menzies wanted all Australians to achieve the dream and, after rising to just over 50% in 1949, home ownership accelerated to around 70%, where it has stayed for the past four decades. Of these people who own homes, only three out of ten households own their home outright and most of these would have started out with a home loan.
